After nearly a decade in banking in India, the Louisville-based analyst expanded her expertise through advanced education in the United States and progressed into a business analytics role at Ferrero.

Professional growth does not always follow a conventional path. Bijya Lakshmi’s career demonstrates how diverse experiences, continuous education, and adaptability can create opportunities for advancement. From teaching and human resources to nearly a decade in government banking in India, she developed a strong foundation in business operations, communication, and decision-making. Building upon that experience, she pursued advanced education in business analytics in the United States and progressed into her current role as a production performance analyst at Ferrero. Her journey reflects continuous professional development across industries and continents.

“Career advancement is not always about following a straight path. It is about using your experience, expanding your knowledge, and pursuing opportunities for continued growth.” Lakshmi said.

An Academic Foundation Built on People and Business

Lakshmi’s journey began in India with a Bachelor of Commerce, followed by an MBA specializing in Human Resources and Marketing. That combination reflected a dual interest in how businesses operate and how people work within them.

She first applied that foundation in the classroom, teaching MBA students for about a year. The role gave her early experience in communication, mentoring, presentation, and leadership. She subsequently qualified for the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET), further strengthening her academic credentials and eligibility for university-level teaching in India. Even so, she chose to look beyond academia and explore the corporate world.

Nearly a Decade in Government Banking

Lakshmi cleared the All India IBPS examination and joined a government bank, where she spent almost ten years. The role placed her in a highly structured, high-responsibility environment. She credits it with teaching her discipline, accountability, customer service, problem-solving, and decision-making under pressure.

By most measures, she had built a secure and respected career. After nearly a decade, however, she wanted to keep learning.

Advancing Her Career Through Business Analytics

Lakshmi decided to pursue a Master of Science in Business Analytics in the United States. The decision meant stepping away from an established career and re-entering the classroom in a new country.

The transition presented opportunities to expand her professional expertise while adapting to a new educational and professional environment. Building upon her extensive experience in banking, business operations, and human resources, Lakshmi developed advanced technical and analytical capabilities through her graduate studies. Rather than starting her career over, she strategically broadened her expertise to pursue opportunities in business analytics and data-driven decision-making.

“Career growth is not always about starting over. Sometimes, it is about building on your experience, expanding your expertise, and embracing opportunities that take you further”. Lakshmi explained. “Sometimes the next chapter requires you to step outside everything you already know.”

She also worked while studying, joining the HR team at Aramark. The position gave her international work experience and let her connect her earlier HR background with the analytical skills she was developing. The experience reinforced her belief that professional advancement can involve expanding into new disciplines while continuing to apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout an established career.

Applying Analytics on the Manufacturing Floor

After completing her Master of Science in Business Analytics, Lakshmi joined Ferrero as a production performance analyst, advancing into a role that integrates her previous business experience with specialized analytical expertise. Her position involves applying analytical thinking within a manufacturing environment and supporting data-informed operational decision-making. The transition represents a progression of her career, combining the business knowledge developed through years of professional experience with advanced technical and analytical capabilities.

What Sets Her Apart

Lakshmi’s professional strength lies in her ability to combine extensive experience in banking, education, and human resources with advanced knowledge of business analytics. Her background has equipped her with a broad understanding of business operations, organizational processes, and professional decision-making. By building upon this foundation through specialized analytical education, she has expanded her capabilities and advanced into the manufacturing industry, bringing a multidisciplinary perspective to complex business challenges.

A Message for Established Professionals

Lakshmi hopes her journey inspires experienced professionals who aspire to advance their careers, explore emerging fields, or expand their expertise through further education. She believes that established professional experience provides a valuable foundation for future opportunities and that career advancement can take many forms. In her view, changing direction does not make the earlier years a waste, because every experience becomes part of a professional identity.

“A successful career provides the foundation for future growth. Advancing professionally requires the confidence to embrace new opportunities while continuing to build upon the experience and knowledge you have already gained.”

She also encourages students and young professionals to build diverse skills. Technical knowledge matters, she noted, but so do communication, adaptability, people skills, discipline, and the ability to keep learning.

“Don’t measure your career only by how quickly you progress,” Lakshmi said. “Focus on whether you are continuing to learn, grow, and move toward the person you want to become.”

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, Lakshmi plans to further advance her expertise in business analytics, operations, and leadership while preparing to pursue doctoral studies. Her professional ambitions reflect a continued commitment to integrating diverse business experiences with advanced analytical knowledge. She also hopes to support students and working professionals by sharing insights from her own journey of professional growth, higher education, and international career development.

“Every professional experience builds a foundation for the next opportunity. Continuous learning and the ability to adapt are what allow us to keep advancing throughout our careers,” she said.
