That one question saves me from chasing false precision. Because an AI model might surface a strong signal, but if you don’t know what it’s actually reliable at, what it’s historically good at predicting, you’re trading blind.

Most models aren’t built to give you truth. They give you probabilities. And those probabilities are only as good as the signal inputs behind them. When I see a bullish prediction, I’m not just asking “what’s the target?” I’m asking how the model reached that conclusion.

I start by checking the model’s historical accuracy, specifically its mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) over recent runs. If the model has consistently misjudged moves in this asset, even a strong-looking signal means little. Next, I consider whether the signal direction has been stable across time, or if it’s flip-flopping with every new data input. Consistency matters more than confidence.

Then I ask how much recent volatility is influencing the output. Some models weigh recent swings too heavily, making their predictions reactive rather than predictive. You get strong signals that are really just echoes of the last spike. That’s not insight, it’s inertia.

Time horizon matters too. Is the model hinting at a short-term edge or flagging a broader trend? A good model should help you tell the difference. And finally, I always look for what’s missing. Has the model accounted for news catalysts, macro movements, or shifts in liquidity? If not, its predictions live in a vacuum.

And maybe most importantly: has this model been right about this specific asset in the past? AI models perform differently across asset classes and market conditions. One might work brilliantly on BTC but fall apart completely on lower liquidity alts. You can’t treat every output with equal weight.
